Understanding and Overcoming Social Phobia

Anyone have some tips on how to get over this??

I have a moderate case of social phobia and would like some help with this.

Any tips you can give me?

social phobia is common as are many other phobias. The best way to conquer a phobia, is to take it a day at a time, & slowly face your phobias. Having a postive attitude helps also. May I suggest that you get out into the public more & more. Do this with friends, who will help you conquer this fear, if they’re true friends. Times will come, when you should get out by yourself. It may be every uncomfy, but you can do it. There are lots of self help books to buy or borrow from the library. The internet may be able to help you choose which books are more helpful. Good luck to you!!!

I have been diagnosed with severe social phobia and social anxiety. I have been off medication and therapy for about three months now, but it started getting worse right after it started getting better. Now I can’t physically, emotionally, or mentally hold a full-time job, which is the amount of money I need to keep my apartment. Is there anything out there that will help me find a full-time job I can handle or at least get me some kind of disability money so that I could work part-time until I am able to work full-time?

Get a note from the doctor that says you are being treated for an illness and that you will be out of work for a period of time. Then call up TDI (temporary disability insurance) and file a claim.

I have been searching for this for a long time now and haven’t had any luck. Even information on a therapist with special training in social phobia/social anxiety would help a lot.

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Check the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies Find-a-Therapist service. You can limit your search to social skills or social anxiety.

Hi, I really suffer from social phobia, it doesn’t let me to live normally. Can you help me somehow, please. Thank you beforehand.

Your phobia is a mental "program" that tells you to act and feel a certain way when you enter certain situations. Thousands of people have overcome phobias using hypnosis and subliminal recording. check them out.

I have a bad social phobia, i have had this for like 6 years and its not getting better, i am now receiving help, when i am around people i dont know i feel so nervous and feel so panicky and hate crowded places , makes me so nervous and paranoid, any one out there has the same problem?

There must be a reason for this phobia. Some bad experience over six years ago. Try to identify the root or possibly a couple of things that are the underlying reason for this which has been amplified by your own paranoia. Once you can identify the issue/issues (probably a mistake/mistakes you have made, but it could be other sides of human nature) into a sentence or a couple of sentences, you have to realise this is the past and try to move on. The past can produce powerful ghosts that can dominate the present. Good luck, I’m speaking from experience we all make mistakes!!!

How can you tell if you have Avoidant Personality Disorder or a severe case of Social Phobia?

Research suggests that people with avoidant personality disorder, in common with social phobics, excessively monitor their own internal reactions when they are involved in social interaction. However, unlike social phobics they also excessively monitor the reactions of the people with whom they are interacting. The extreme tension created by this monitoring may account for the hesitant speech and taciturnity of many people with avoidant personality disorder. They are so preoccupied with monitoring themselves and others that producing fluent speech is difficult.

Avoidant personality disorder is reported to be especially prevalent in people with anxiety disorders, although estimates of comorbidity vary widely due to differences in (among others) diagnostic instruments. Research suggests that approximately 10–50% of the people who have a panic disorder with agoraphobia have APD, as well as about 20–40% of the people who have a social phobia (social anxiety disorder). Some studies report prevalence rates of up to 45% among the people with generalized anxiety disorder and up to 56% of the people with obsessive-compulsive disorder. Although it is not mentioned in the DSM-IV, earlier theorists have proposed a personality disorder which has a combination of features from borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder, called "avoidant-borderline mixed personality"
