Its only a matter of selection, I believe. Are you a very polite person? If so, only trough signs near phobia you'll understand that our balance also comes on making choices on the ones we really want to see for - humbly - we can but take care on some parts of "the world" in our daily lives!!!!!
Is not serious, I believe
References :
Social phobia is common as are many other phobias. The best way to conquer a phobia, is to take it a day at a time, & slowly face your phobias. Having a postive attitude helps also. May I suggest that you get out into the public more & more. Do this with friends, who will help you conquer this fear, if they're true friends. Times will come, when you should get out by yourself. It may be every uncomfy, but you can do it. There are lots of self help books to buy or borrow from the library. The internet may be able to help you choose which books are more helpful. Good luck to you!!!
References :
Don't worry about it too much. Ideally, if you keep your interactions with people to a bearable minimum, do not speak in front of people much, but gradually, overtime, increase your presence in social groups and in conversations ever so slightly, you'll be able to ease yourself in, at least far enought to function. Do not rush, do not compare yourself to others socially, try not to worry what people think about you, and try not to be too judgmental of yourself for your shortcomings (especially if you are unable to do any of the above, as it is much harder than I suggest, as I am sure you are aware).
Socialize rarely, and for the purpose of furthering your own competence, self-esteem, and enjoyment, not for the frivolous desires for gossip and small-talk that disgust me personally (I cannot be sure if you feel the same way). One step at a time, with your self in mind.
References :
Whatever your phobia is, the only way to get over it is to muster up the courage and practice placing yourself in your fearful social situation. Start slowly at first, baby steps are good and then immerse yourself. Have a friend help you as well. It's much harder to manage alone because you might give up on yourself.
I used to be terrified to speak on the phone, but I got a job as a secretary and couldn't escape. Now, I have very little qualms with it, though I would still rather speak face to face than on the phone...
References :
Depressed people that I have met also seem to have a social phobia, too. Phobia, of course, means fear, a fear of meeting people. More normal to occur in adolescents who are unsure of themselves and have lacked, through no fault of their own, the basic ability to meet and talk along with people. It is unreasonable in the way it works, but it happens.

On the other hand, depression was explained to me just yesterday in an article which stated that depression happens when people who should be happy with how they are in their lives are not that way. My wife used to be unhappy unless she had something to worry about. Not that that made her happy. It drove me nuts. She was nuts and I never knew it and when I did I could not get help for her because, by law, nobody could do anything for her unless she asked for it. Not me, her husband. She was off with the fairies. She died from it and there was not a thing I could do. Diagnosis; depression.
References :
It is a method that is used to treat social anxiety. It is intended to help reduce stress and tension in a person by putting them into a relaxed state of mind.
Yes its also used for other phobias and depression.
References :
Personal experience in group therapy

With a qualified hypnotist yes.

Phobias exist ONLY in the mind and hypnosis by seeking the unconscious memories that are buried deep may be able to reveal, and then eliminate the cause e.g. a great fear of heights caused by looking over the edge of the Hoover dam age 3.

However, in the hands of a bad or unqualified hypnotist, dredging up some of the horrors that lie within the unconscious mind could exacerbate the problem.

At any rate, the usual crap "Take two tablets with a glass of water and call me in the morning" will avail nothing. And a good hynotherapist can accomplish in a couple of weeks what it would take six years of traditional psychoanalysis.

My hypnotherapist was unable to resolve my particular phobia however as it was pantophobia or fear of everything!
References :
Short, clear and simple; and you can even post your question and contact the author regarding particular subject you are interested in

No, they are NOT the same thing. A phobia is defined as an irratonal fear, and we usually call diagnose someone who is afraid of being in public as having agoraphobia. An anxiety disorder, onthe other hand, is usually an intermittent problem, i.e. the person has sporadic anxiety attacks while in public, usually in crowded places. It is the less serious of the two.
But either problem can usually be treated with a combination of therapy (usually in vivo exercises, or gradual desenstisation) and medications like SSRI anti-depressants.
References :
I'm a graduate psychology student
