I tend to think … I tend to think that this fear is naturally cured in time following some steps. Still: who’s willing to wait for it? We should all try to think of some ways to overcome the fear. Why am I afraid of not staying inside? What’s the chance of someone hurting me if I go out? Why can’t I sustain my point of view in front of someone? They’ll laugh etc?How can I be sure of that?
I managed to overcome it [like 90%]. My last problem is talking in front of like 50+ people. I get lost in my thoughts.
When I was little I … When I was little I couldn’t talk at all in front of more than 2-3 people [including friends]. At school I was the shy, “always in her bench” girl. It was really difficult for me to start a conversation and make friends. Apart of the kids from my block who I grew up with, I didn’t have any other. And even so, most of the time I used to play alone. I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember, but in the past 4 years I decided to deal with it so I took some measures.
no way am i taking … no way am i taking pharmaceutical drugs.
from those i will lose my teeth my sanity and eventually my life. i usto go to therapist all she would do is try to shove drugs up my mouth and i would reject all of it.
There’s also one … There’s also one thing that I would like to know… do the medications help stop the blushing? Because I’ve had this case since I was 12! I’m now 21 and still haven’t gone to therapy even though I probably should, because I get really bad anxiety when like you said I feel like people might be watching and judging or especially when I have an oral presentation to do… which I try to avoid at all cost!
I just wanted to … I just wanted to make a point about the walmart example (falling in the store and people starring) Anxiety might come through that situation mainly because it might have happened earlier in life, let’s say in preschool or in high school! That’s something that follows you for a long time in life! It has a deeper effect at time, than just the thought of trpping…
No, most people do … No, most people do not have “bad” side effects. In other words the side effects that commonly occur are more of a nuisance. But to some people they are more serious than to others. You should read about the meds and talk to your doctor to find the one with the right balance of effectiveness vs side effects for you. But overall I find the SSRIs and SNRIs are tolerated quite well.
There is no cure … There is no cure unfortunately but social phobia is treatable with therapy and medication. I would lean towards cognitive behavioral therapy and medication that works on serotonin (SSRI or SNRI). The meds are helpful but won’t take it away so you must also do the therapy to get the most benefit. Find someone skilled at the therapy and knowledgable about social phobia (a psychiatrist that can treat you with meds and therapy or a psychiatrist and therapist skilled at CBT). There is hope!!
so how can one … so how can one overcome this, what is the cure? is there medicatios that work? im 22 i need to get rid of this i havent had a girl in over 2 years and i cant start college which i really want to start i need help!
I can talk to my … I can talk to my friends fine but when it comes to people i dont know and girls i get a little anxious but when it comes to presenting i cant talk, choke and shake. It is also hard for me to make eye contact and I am very self concious about my laugh and smile.
Good thinking. I … Good thinking. I don’t know the answer but it could be that the trait of anxiety in general is helpful to humans in that it helps a group to have some people who are hypervigilant to threats. Perhaps the anxiety disorders are the extreme consequence of the genetics that help by allowing hypervigilance. Just a thought. Does anyone else have any ideas?
Just to let you … Just to let you know, you probably heard so much that it makes you sick (or even sicker but you’re not alone pal.
Enjoy the good moments !
Yes, you mentioned … Yes, you mentioned effexor. I took that in 2004. I remember sweating a lot. It did seem to help a little but I stopped after a while.
HAve you tried … HAve you tried medication? I suffered from anxiety and shyness for years before being diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I now take Effexor (150 mg) daily and have never felt more relaxed and able to deal with social situations. See your family doctor!!!!
