<p>   Before I get back to dispelling myths about <b><a target='_blank' href="http://www.bipolardisorderdepressionanxiety.com/bipolar-disorder/">bipolar disorder</a></b>, I want to talk a little about <b>words</b>. As a writer, words are my bread and butter. <b> <i>Language can be very powerful</i></b>. Words don`t just help us define reality, they shapes it. Poor, tiny Pluto is not a planet anymore. Why? We SAY it isn`t, that`s why.   </p>
<p>  <b>Whacko. Nutcase. Lunatic. Psycho. Freak.</b>  </p>
<p> Those words can be particularly powerful when used with evil intention. A few of you reading this might be upset by me referring to people who suffer from bipolar disorder as whackos. This is understandable. Those words can seriously hurt, particularly when they come from a &#8220;friend.&#8221; Trust me. I know. </p>
<p>  <b>Just as words can make meaning, they can be meaningless.</b>   It is dependent on two things: the person who&#8217;s speaking them and the intention behind them. Let me give you an example. </p>
<p> As a writer, I spend the majority of my time inside. I&#39;m 1/8th Cherokee, so I would tan tell if I ever saw the light of day. The reminder of my ancestry is Western European. Essentially, my skin is as white as the driven snow. Now I am going to say a word and then dive for cover. </p>
<p>  <b>Nigger.</b>  </p>
<p>  <b> <i>Man&#8230; I feel crappy even typing that.</i> </b>  </p>
<p> That word was used by white people to oppress black people for a very long time. Whites used that word as a weapon, and boy was it a good one. It was like the English language version equivalent of the neutron bomb for a very long time. That word was employed to cause shame, which explains why I feel ashamed saying it even once.</p>
<p> <b> </b><b>Nonetheless,</b> the N-word (sorry I can&#8217;t bring myself to type it again) is only <b>a weapon</b> when  it&#8217;s  used like one. Watch any film,  go to any club, walk down any street and  you`ll hear black people saying it to one another, using it like a term of endearment. It&#8217;s OK for them to say it, because  they ARE  it. For me to say it? Not OK.  I`ll doubtless get away with it this one time because my Desire isn`t to  harm,  but to help. Or at the very least   I am  hoping I am able to. If not, <b><i>I sincerely apologize.</i></b></p>
<p> <b> Being bipolar, the  nature  of our  illness   ensures  that  we&#8217;re   an emotional  bunch,  </b> but let&#8217;s try  hard not to be too touchy about words. They can only harm us if we let them. Let&#8217;s  begin  with the one I  loathe  the most: </p>
<p> <b> Freak. </b> </p>
<p> Freak freak freak freak FREAK FREAK FREAK!!! </p>
<p> If I say that word repeatedly,  it stars  to sound like gibberish, something I just made up. The more that  I  use it, the less it  means.  <b> The less it  means  the less harm it can do</b><b>. </b> </p>
<p> <b> Try it for yourself.  </b> Pick the one word that hurts you the most and say it over and over. Make that word just as dead as the not-a-planet Pluto.  Just don&#8217;t  forget that your word isn&#8217;t dead to  everybody. If that word bothers  some other person,  don&#8217;t say it around them. <b>It is all  about kindness, people. It&#8217;s  that simple.</b></p>
<p> Well, once  more,   I am  over word count. And I haven&#8217;t even  discussed  one  myth,  but I  might  have just dispelled one. </p>
<p> <b> Bipolar  Parable  3: &#8220;Being bipolar makes you bad.&#8221;</b></p>
<p> I`m bipolar. If  I&#8217;m a bad person, would  I go   through  this much effort to avoid offending the black community? Nope. I&#8217;d be  screaming  the N-word from the  rooftops  without shame. </p>
<p> <b> There are  people out there who are scared of folks with bipolar disorder due to actions of  a few  select people.</b>Yes, there are some who really are wicked, vicious people who  are  dangerous  to others, but there are  many, MANY most wicked people who DON`T have bipolar disorder.  Most of us are rather like  you. Some of us, and  I am  not naming names here, are gentle,  loving dads who try  to not  let their  children  see them cry during Disney flicks.</p>
<p> OK. It&#8217;s me. I do that. Pathetic, right? Well  <b> this  entire  article has been about  setting yourself free  from shame, </b>  so I  might  as well come out of the closet. Disney  flicks  make me cry. That fact may very well make me a freak. Having bipolar disorder, on the other hand, does not. </p>

External threats that are perceived as such also cause anxiety.  It is, however, irrational and chronic anxiety that leads to a particular form of anxiety disorder.  Characterized by many types, anxiety disorders relate directly to particular triggers and causes.</p>
<p>Anxiety disorders and their various types</p>
<p>Anxiety disorders which are general in nature</p>
<p>A person who has this type of anxiety disorder usually experiences prolonged anxiety that is often without basis. More accurately, people with generalized anxiety disorders cannot articulate the reason behind their anxiety. This type of anxiety usually last for six months and often affects women.  Due to the persistence of the anxiety, people affected with generalized anxiety disorder constantly fret and worry. This results to heart palpitations, insomnia, headaches, and dizzy spells.  </p>
<p>Phobias that are specific</p>
<p>Specific phobia, unlike generalized anxiety disorder, typically results in irrational and extreme fear of particular objects and specific situations. Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, intense fear, nausea, and shaking are typical for those exposed to situations and objects that they fear. Common fears include fear of enclosed spaces, heights, blood and animals.  It is not uncommon for a person suffering from a specific phobia to disregard safety in an attempt to escape a particular situation.</p>
<p>Panic attacks</p>
<p>Panic disorder, known as Agoraphobia, shows symptoms of unexpected and sudden recurring panic attacks. Reluctance to be alone, fear of losing control, dizziness, chest pains and shaking are typical symptoms.  Curiously, people suffering from agoraphobia are quite aware that their fears have no basis in reality.  This explains why many avoid public situations as well as being totally alone. Panic attacks, if severe enough, can be so out of control that one injures themselves.</p>
<p>Phobias that are social in nature</p>
<p>Alternatively called social anxiety, a person with social phobia may exhibit similar symptoms like those of panic disorder especially in social situations. Shaking, dizziness, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations may ensue when a person with <a href="http://www.socialphobiascenter.com" target=_self>social phobia</a> finds his or herself at the center of attention or in the company of many people, regardless whether they are strangers or not.  </p>
<p>Obsessive-compulsive disorder</p>
<p>Anxiety caused by a persistent obsession or idea is typical for people suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Their mechanism for escaping a particular anxiety is frequently seen in repetitive actions or behavior that alleviates a particular fear. A good example of this would be of one obsessed with cleanliness experiencing anxiety by seeing something placed off-center. A typical behavior to avoid this anxiety would be for one to excessively clean and organize without logical reasoning.</p>
<p>PTSD</p>
<p>After a person experiences a severely traumatic event, post-traumatic stress disorder may occur. Reliving the experience on a regular basis mentally is not uncommon, and can cause significant anxiety and stress. If a person with PTSD is exposed to a situation, person, or object that reminds him or her of the incident, an uncontrollable re-experiencing of the trauma may occur, manifesting itself by loss of control, extreme crying, or panicking. On the more subtler side, insomnia and isolation may occur. PTSD can manifest itself well into the future.</p>
<p>An obvious determination of the particular anxiety disorder a person is suffering from is crucial to recovery and the treatment sought. Therapy typically deals with both the anxiety disorder and its symptoms as well as triggers that cause particular reactions. A thorough assessment is crucial in determining an appropriate diagnosis, and it is only after a successful diagnosis that one can begin to recover through appropriate therapy.</p>
